The war on the Comilla road

1971-05 – 1971-11 · Dhaka–Chittagong road, Comilla district

The road from Dhaka to Chittagong runs through Comilla district, close to the Indian border. In 1971 it was the main overland route for moving troops and supplies to the south-east and to Chittagong port.

Through the middle months of the war, guerrillas operating from Sector 2 struck it again and again: ambushing vehicles, mining the road surface, and bringing down bridges and culverts. The aim was less to win a single fight than to make every journey slow, escorted and costly, tying down soldiers to guard crossings.

The mission "Ambush on the Comilla road" is a composite. It dramatises the pattern of these actions rather than one recorded ambush, and its characters are fictional.
